Website reader Ron has created many small projects in his garden that you can also try at home to help appreciate and understand wildlife!

Mammal Viewing Box

"I made the box from 12mm ply, wood the dimensions are not critical but mine is 12 inches long, 9 inches wide and 9 inches tall with a felt roof. It has 2 plastic pipes going into the box where the food is put. A window is cut in the front panel. If this is placed in front of the patio doors you will see the little mammals coming feed."

You can put lights in the box, the creatures will soon get used to them. To see a small video clip of a mouse visits mine click here http://link.brightcove.com/services/link/bcpid1138309646/bclid1138334365/bctid1137745905 (Nature Watch Video Streaming Service)

Small Garden Pond

"If you garden is small like mine and there is no room for a garden pond you could, like me, make one in a pot."

"Take a large plastic flower pot, the bigger the better (if it has got holes in, you will have to block them up with sealant). Put a layer of pond compost in the bottom and after planting a few pond plants, put a layer of gravel on top.

This small pond of mine attracts many kinds of pond insect."

Insect Home

"Take a couple of baked bean tins and some dried hollow plant stems that you find in the hedge rows at this time of year. Cut them to size and fill the tins and you have got some cheap insect homes."

"Another way of making insect home is to take some blocks of wood or logs and drill some holes of different sizes and again, you have got some cheap insect homes."
